Why Dive in Okinawa?

Okinawa is home to Japan's largest coral reef ecosystem, with approximately 400 species of coral and over 1,000 species of tropical fish. With an average annual water temperature of 23°C and visibility regularly exceeding 30 meters, diving is possible year-round. From the legendary "Kerama Blue" of the Kerama Islands to the mystical Blue Cave in Onna Village, the breathtaking topography of Miyako Island, and the manta ray encounters in the Yaeyama Islands, each area offers a distinct underwater experience. Whether you're a complete beginner looking for an introductory dive or a certified diver seeking advanced adventures, Okinawa's dive operators offer services tailored to every skill level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I dive even if I can't swim?
Yes, experience dives are designed for non-swimmers too. Your instructor will stay with you at all times, and the buoyancy control device (BCD) keeps you stable underwater. However, if you have a severe fear of water, it is best to discuss this with the dive shop beforehand.
When is the best season for diving in Okinawa?
July through September offers the warmest water, but Okinawa is a year-round diving destination. For the clearest visibility, winter (November to February) is best. For manta rays, target August through November in the Yaeyama area. Each season has its own unique appeal.
Do I need a diving license?
No license is needed for "experience diving," where an instructor guides you to a maximum depth of 12 meters. If you want more freedom to explore, consider getting certified in Okinawa. The PADI Open Water course can be completed in as few as 2 days.
Can I fly on the same day as my dive?
No. After diving, residual nitrogen remains in your body, and altitude changes can trigger decompression sickness. Wait at least 12 hours after a single dive and 18-24 hours after multiple dives before flying. It is strongly recommended to avoid diving on the last day of your trip.
Can children participate in diving?
Most dive shops accept children aged 10 and older for experience dives. The PADI Junior Open Water certification is available from age 10, with parental accompaniment required for those under 12. Depending on the child's comfort level, starting with snorkeling is also a great option.
Kerama or Blue Cave: which should I choose?
The Blue Cave in Onna Village is easily accessible and can be enjoyed in half a day, making it ideal for first-timers or those with limited time. The Kerama Islands offer outstanding clarity and high sea turtle encounter rates, perfect for a full-day diving adventure. If your budget and schedule allow, we recommend experiencing both.
Can I dive in the rain?
Rain has minimal impact on underwater conditions, so diving is generally possible. Cancellations occur due to strong winds, high waves, or approaching typhoons. During typhoon season (July to October), there is a higher chance of weather-related cancellations, so building a backup day into your itinerary is advisable.
