Why Dive in Okinawa?
Okinawa is home to Japan's largest coral reef ecosystem, with approximately 400 species of coral and over 1,000 species of tropical fish. With an average annual water temperature of 23°C and visibility regularly exceeding 30 meters, diving is possible year-round. From the legendary "Kerama Blue" of the Kerama Islands to the mystical Blue Cave in Onna Village, the breathtaking topography of Miyako Island, and the manta ray encounters in the Yaeyama Islands, each area offers a distinct underwater experience. Whether you're a complete beginner looking for an introductory dive or a certified diver seeking advanced adventures, Okinawa's dive operators offer services tailored to every skill level.
Popular Diving Areas
Kerama Islands
慶良間諸島
Just 50 minutes by express boat from Naha. Known as "Kerama Blue" for its world-class water clarity, the archipelago boasts an exceptionally high sea turtle encounter rate. Over 50 dive sites are spread across Zamami and Tokashiki Islands, with humpback whales migrating through in winter.
Blue Cave (Central)
青の洞窟
The most popular spot on the main island. Sunlight filtering through the cave entrance paints the water in an ethereal blue glow. With shallow beach entry, it is ideal for first-time divers. Nearby sites like Tsubame-no-Ne and Yamada Point offer more challenging options for certified divers.
Miyako Island
宮古島
A mecca for topography enthusiasts. World-renowned sites such as Tori-ike (Twin Caves), Antonio Gaudi, and Maou-no-Kyuden (Devil's Palace) feature intricate caves, arches, and swim-throughs. Visibility can exceed 50 meters on the best days, complemented by stunning coral formations.
Yaeyama Islands
八重山諸島
Centered around Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands. Kabira Bay's Manta Scramble is one of the world's premier manta ray encounter points. Around Iriomote, expect large pelagic fish and barracuda schools. Yonaguni Island is famous for its winter hammerhead shark aggregations.
