Summer Marine Guide (June - August)

Peak season — experience Okinawa's ocean at its most spectacular

Summer in Okinawa's Waters

June begins with the tail end of rainy season (tsuyu), bringing unstable weather in the first half. But once the rains clear in late June, Okinawa enters its absolute prime season. July and August bring air temperatures above 30°C (86°F), water temperatures of 28-30°C (82-86°F), and perfect conditions for every marine activity imaginable. Sunlight penetrates deep, making coral reefs shimmer at their most vibrant. Be aware that this is peak season — prices are at their highest, popular spots get crowded, and typhoon season begins from July onward.

Typhoon Advisory

July through September is typhoon season. When a typhoon approaches, the ocean closes for several days and all marine activities are cancelled. Plan ahead with these precautions.

  • Purchase travel insurance that covers flight cancellations and extended stays due to typhoons
  • Choose plans and accommodations with free cancellation policies
  • Have backup plans ready (Churaumi Aquarium, Yachimun pottery street, Shuri Castle, etc.)
  • Monitor the Japan Meteorological Agency typhoon tracker regularly
  • Allow 1-2 extra days after a typhoon passes, as seas remain rough

Summer Booking & Preparation Tips

  • July-August is peak season — book popular shops 2-3 months in advance
  • For Blue Cave, the earliest morning time slots have the fewest crowds
  • Sun protection is essential — UV is intense even underwater, so wear a rash guard
  • Prevent heat stroke by hydrating frequently; use hats and parasols on the beach
  • Budget for peak season pricing, which is typically 20-50% higher than off-peak
