Area Overview
Beyond the Kerama, Miyako, and Yaeyama chains, Okinawa has many other captivating islands. Kume Island, known as the "Island of Beauty" (Kumi no Shima), is just 30 minutes by air from Naha and famous for Hate no Hama - a sandbar often called the most beautiful in the Orient. Ie Island is a small island just 30 minutes by ferry from the Motobu Peninsula, with the distinctive silhouette of Mount Gusuku. Yoron Island, technically in Kagoshima Prefecture but very close to Okinawa, is known for Yurigahama - a phantom sandbar that appears only at low tide. These islands see far fewer tourists, offering the ultimate appeal of untouched seas enjoyed at a relaxed island pace.
